Stonemason Efficiency, Skill & Stone Selection
The efficiency and skill of a stonemason are closely linked to the type and style of stone being used. Each variety of stone, as well as the approach to its installation, demands a specific amount of labour. When the design calls for more refined and tightly fitted joints—such as those used in the dry style—the labour requirement can increase significantly.
Schist Stone: Preparation and Cost Considerations
Schist stone is commonly available in one-tonne bags, pre-cut for convenience. When sourced directly from a quarry, schist has typically been split and guillotined, ensuring it is ready for a qualified stonemason to undertake the final shaping and placement. This preliminary preparation helps to keep the labour component of schist stonework relatively low.
While purchasing pre-guillotined schist does involve additional transport costs, the overall supply cost for schist remains comparatively modest. This balance between reduced labour input and manageable material cost makes schist an attractive option for many projects.
